Dear I Eat Manga,
Thank you for releasing your version of KHR 312 before Saturday so that I could get this post done before heading off to the Rally to Restore Sanity (FUCK YEAH 8D) tomorrow. You guys are all right!And also, thanks so much to everyone who passed along birthday wishes yesterday! ♥ It was a good day--among other things, I got to visit baby sis's preschool to watch her Halloween parade, which was adorable and awesome. And my other sis gave me a card that played the theme from Rocky when I opened it, which cracked me up because for some reason (possibly having something to do with the fact that I am a giant nerd), all I could think of was Ryohei. XD
Anyway, let me get started with this now.
1. This is pretty much the best timing for a color page ever. Just when I was starting to get really frustrated with the way this fight was turning out, along comes the sexiest shot of TYL!Lambo I've ever seen--not only that, but somehow he actually manages to make the same armor from last week look ridiculously cool instead of just plain ridiculous. I already knew that Amano's color pages had magic powers, but now I have to check off "ability to make me forgive virtually anything" alongside "ability to make me drool until I pass out from dehydration."
Enjoy it while it lasts, folks, because on the next page, we go right back to this. Alas.
2. Oh, wow. Even though I was fully expecting this to happen (and even though I feel a little guilty for it), this page made me laugh hysterically. OH, LAMBO. YOUR FACE. For some reason I was reminded of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!" Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again.
Ooh, but he sticks the landing! Nice, Lambo. He's doing better than I thought he would. (By the way, I love Gokudera's expression on the bottom center panel. XD)
3. Oh fuck you, Large, that's totally cheating. Lambo, I am so with you on this one. Also, Large's counter-argument is one of the worst I've ever heard. "It's not cheating because it's my ability! My special ability is cheating!" ...
Makes me wonder if anyone in the Shimon family is actually going to fight fair. Shitt P, you still have honor, right? :(
4. Not much to say about this page, except 1) Large launching into a supervillain speech is 100% hilarious, and 2) that Gokudera/Tsuna "!!" shot is easily the most detailed reaction panel we've had in ages. Why can't they all be like that? /whine
5. Oh, that's what they were reacting to. Hell, I'd "!!" too.
This fight is actually starting to get interesting! How do you win a sumo match against a guy with a mountain on his back? Lambo, there's a good chance you might be completely screwed here.
And it looks like he's starting to figure that out. "It's no fun if there's no way at all to win. :/" "Oh yeah, speaking of which, I forgot to mention that if you lose, YOU GO TO JAIL FOREVER." "FUCKING HELL, YOU GUYS, NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THAT." "Yeah, our bad. I guess we just figured you'd kind of magically deduce it on your own, what with your entire life being one giant example of Murphy's Law and all."
6. Interesting that Gokudera and Tsuna each try radically different tactics to encourage Lambo. Tsuna attempts to scare him to death, which backfires rather predictably, and Gokudera tries to pump him up by yelling trite motivational phrases and insults at him. Which works about as well as you might expect. XD
It looks like Reborn's got his own strategy, though...
7. Yes! The "guilt trip Tsuna so that he in turn can guilt trip Lambo" strategy! Still #1 at manipulating people, Reborn. It's listed in Fuuta's book and everything.
But more important--little by little, it appears that something amazing is beginning to happen in this chapter. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may just be witnessing the emergence of Lambo as a three-dimensional character! A character with realistic feelings and reactions! A character who freezes up at the thought of facing an enemy with A FUCKING MOUNTAIN ON HIS FUCKING BACK and potentially losing and going to prison; a character who jumpily lashes out at the people who are trying to motivate him because IT'S NOT FUCKING WORKING; and most of all, a character who's scared to death of what he's about to do, but is willing to do it anyway because he loves his family. A character who knows that he's kind of a wimp, but even so, wants to be better. Wants to grow up and be a hero.
"I'm the one that wants to stay with you." You know, up until this point, I was pretty disappointed by IEM's translation this week (and last week too, come to think of it--did they get a new translator or editor recently?), but this one line completely makes up for it. Oh my God, this page made me grin so hard. AND THERE'S THIS WARM AND FUZZY FEELING IN MY HEART THAT I CAN'T EXPLAIN. ;_; COULD THIS BE LOVE?
8. "Who knows, if I don't try." Holy shit! Seriously, is this even the same Lambo?? Does anyone else have this feeling like all their hopes and dreams have suddenly come true? A long-mistreated character is suddenly having epic moment after epic moment, and developing in ways I'd always hoped he would, fulfilling the potential I always thought was there but feared Amano might never get around to showing? I can't freaking believe it.
Honestly, for me this is like chapter 294 all over again. It's like all of my characterization dreams come true fffdlkajlksjal;;s THANK YOU AMANO, BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER.
9. Damn, Large, you are one cool cucumber. "That level of attack can only injure me." I for one would not be able to say something like that with a straight face. He may have the characterization of a paper clip (if not the girth), but you can't deny the man has balls of stone.
Actually, they may literally be balls of stone. Idk.
10. So it's a good thing that Lambo has THE POWER OF MAGNETISM on his side. 8D
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING.
CLEARLY AMANO IS TAKING THIS WHOLE SUMO BEETLE THING MUCH TOO FAR. LIKE, MILES TOO FAR.
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?

Nothing beats chapter 294. Nothing yet. xD I have a VOICED commentary half-Italian, half-Neapolitan somewhere on my pc I recorded because of my fuckin' excitement at the time and I will never have the courage to listen to it. X°°°°°°D

1- It's official that Amano's scary-amazing, color page-wise (and otherwise, but I'll get to that). IT'S STILL A RIDICULOUS POWER UP but with this we have to let it slide. FFFF.

6- ..Isn't it pretty hypocritical of Tsuna to try to use the fear thing on Lambo? Because anytime it's used on him, it fails 8|
And of course that wasn't going to work Gokudera, PSSSHHH.
7- Okay, fucking Reborn and his reverse-psychology man. (I think a part of him was using the insulting as a "NO REBORN I'M STRONG ENOUGH TO BEAT YOUUU!!!1!" trigger, just in case. XD) This guy's still got it, I must say that. As hilarious as this chapter was at first, I stopped everything seeing Reborn take blame for something, pfffft
And then just...Oh God Lambo ;___; &hearts&hearts&hearts. I. Just. I've been really wanting this for so long man hjgskjd It is possibly the cutest, sweetest thing ever in ever and gahh I love this kid, so much. WHY IS THIS CHAPTER GOOD. I did not expect this chapter to be more than somewhat entertaining. And yet...
And then that line. Yesssss. I love how it's like, yeah guys, Lambo has been conscious of what's going on and he really does care about the rest of the gang and he wants to be part of them. And..I actually thought about it, and about how Tsuna is and how Lambo's probably never with the guardians in the future and. It's probably because they thought he shouldn't be in battles, and shouldn't have to do that dangerous stuff 'cause he's the kid! So he's left out and they grow apart and...it shouldn't be like that, especially if he's supposed to be considered such a close part of Tsuna's Family. So for him to really say "PLEASE. Take me with you, because I WANT to go," kinda shows that...maybe TYL!Lambo's regretted how it worked out. And maybe now it won't work out that way, and Lambo will turn out to be as equal and constant of guardian as the rest of them.
8- Does anyone else have this feeling like all their hopes and dreams have suddenly come true?
YES. And what freaks me out the most is that last week set up for the most annoyingly boring chapter ever. How the hell..
10- WOO EARTH SCIENCE AND PHYSICS.
And honestly I don't care either. I don't think I can care. I'm too busy being ridiculously proud.
What I DO care about is that...it's almost not fair dude. It's like Amano could do almost anything in this series that would make me =| and win me back without even thinking about it. This chapter is a clear example of that (and most likely the entire arc).

Oh goodness, yes. I've always tried to appreciate Lambo, but I think this chapter finally delivered that last bit of dimension to his character that I needed in order to like him with a constant affection, rather than momentary.
I also loved how Gokudera was all, "I'll handle this, boss~~" and failed so hard. I've always gotten a grin or chuckle out from seeing Lambo and Gokudera exchanges, but the past couple of chapters have made me really want to see/know how they interact with each other when they're older.
Also, happy belated birthday! I hope you had an awesome day.

I don't know how Amano does it...one week I'm going WTF I HATE THIS STUPID FIGHT, and the next I'm like, ♥I'm so sorry I take it all back♥
Lambo's speech made me wibble. You think this kid's all about grape candies and playtime and trying to be as annoying as humanly possible, but. He looks up to these guys, and while he's already a Guardian, he's anxious to grow up so he can "join the big boys club", so to speak. I just...I'm such a sucker for this kind of thing, and having to wade through pages and pages of Really Cliched Shounen Fighting and Yelling was worth it to get to these few panels where we actually get to see that Lambo has feelings and emotions too.
Now, all Amano has to do is not screw up the end of this fight. Whether or not Lambo wins is kind of a moot point right now, because either way you know the result will hit Tsuna straight to the core. But please, NO MORE DRAWS WHERE THEY JUST FALL DOWN.
Oh, and belated Happy Birthday, and hope you have fun this weekend!

You know, I never really liked him at all before. But now . . . *sniff* Lambo, WE ARE SO PROUD.
"I wanted to catch up as soon as possible . . . to the world where young Vongola and the others live. I'm the one that wants to stay with you."
That really says a lot, especially with the panel of everyone looking tall and strong and cool -- except Lambo, and all you see of him is a tuft of hair that suggests he's looking upward. (Also, is Mukuro that little black shadow in the background here? Ahaha.)
This chapter right here shows why KHR sucked me right in like no other shounen fighting manga has. Amano can do a string of mediocre-mediocre-creepy-mediocre and then, suddenly, SURPRISE AWESOME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Awwww. ♥ But you know Lambo's probably going to get dragged away to prison, right?
(I just went back and re-read 294 for comparison's sake, and . . . wow. That hit way harder than it did the first -- or even second -- time I read it. I think I spent thirty seconds just staring at the cover page and going ;_; noooooo my heart.)

THE BEST KIND OF COMMENT, in other words!
1. Scary-amazing, definitely. And I can't believe how much of a 180 my opinion has done when it comes to his power-up. From "ugly and useless" to "capable of looking good in an awesome color page, and otherwise kickass in general." YOU GO, LAMBO.

I kind of thought the opposite, actually. Half the time, Reborn motivates Tsuna by manipulating his fears (though usually it's less "you'll go to jail if you lose" and more "ALL THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE will go to jail if you lose"), and it works. So I figured Tsuna was just trying to do the same thing here, only he screwed it up. XD
And Gokudera, meanwhile, went with the kind of tactic that would usually work on him. They were trying, I think; they just weren't really thinking about what would actually work for Lambo.
7. Seeing Reborn begin a sentence with the words "I shouldn't have" sure took me aback, even if it did turn out to be part of a manipulative ploy on his part. This arc has been full of surprises, I gotta say.
And yes, Lambo's character development made me "!!!! ♥" so much because it was everything I'd ever wanted to see from his character, only I never expected it to actually happen. What with Gokudera becoming a responsible leader, Tsuna taking a step up as boss, and now even TYL!Lambo manning up, I'm starting to feel like anything's possible in terms of character development. Next thing we know, Hibari will be getting a real personality, and Yamamoto will be having a mini-arc filled with buckets of angst (okay, maybe I'm the only one who wants that XD). HELL TO THE YES.
