I think Byakuran's thought process is something like this:

PLAN A: Concoct elaborate scheme to legitimately acquire the rings via a reality tv-esque board game brought to life.
PLAN B: Fuck this shit I'm just going to take them.

If there's anything this manga has taught me, it's that NOTHING IS EVER TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. HAVE FAITH!!

XD I KNOW FFFFFF unless Choice like...contributes to this super special awesome plot twist I think the battle was just to have an excuse for a lifesized version of the game Shouichi and Byakuran used to play, so it can like draw upon their connections and not-so-forgotten deals in the past and whatnot.
