I think it actually was intended to make things better, though; it's just that it was incredibly ill-conceived. Like Amano felt guilty about sticking him with all that angst, and maybe wanted to give him a bit of a reprieve because everyone else was catching lucky breaks left and right (Tsuyoshi's seriously fine all of a sudden? SERIOUSLY?), and the only way she could think to do it was to retcon his angsty past. BUT SHE DID IT IN ABSOLUTELY THE DUMBEST WAY POSSIBLE. Idk. I do agree that it could make for a really epic reunion between him and his dad in his arc, though, which is what I'm hoping for; if that happens, I'll take back everything negative I ever said about it.
Now that you mention it, it did seem like there was a bit of lampshading that came into play. They basically acknowledged that they were just sitting around doing nothing while the boys did all the cool stuff, and then Bianchi jumped in with that completely awkward rationalization of it... orz.
