KHR 296!
1. For some reason, Amano starts off this ridiculously awesome chapter with two of the most boring pages I've ever seen in KHR, in which everyone is basically just standing around in suits looking serious while the Ninth takes approximately five years to give Tsuna the freaking bottle of Sin™. I'm sure this is all going to be incredibly tense and dramatic once this scene rolls around in the anime, but until then, I'm about one more bad mafia mustache away from falling asleep at my desk.
2. Fortunately, the third page gets much more interesting as someone has apparently decided to disrupt the ceremony by grinding their nails on a chalkboard! Or at least that is how I interpreted this giant "SCREEEEEECH" panel that made everyone fall down on their knees and dramatically clutch their ears in pain. I mean, what else could it be??
...oh. Well, shit. They're never going to get the deposit back on that house now.
Reasonably, the Vongola decide it's time to spring into action. Did anyone else get to the very last panel and think, "SAVE US, COYOTE NOUGAT!"? Cuz I did. He looks like he's all set to go be a superhero. DO IT, OLD MAN.
3. OH. HELL. YES.
"LET'S PROTECT OUR BOSS BY SURROUNDING HIM AND BEING ON FIRE!" Hoh-lee shit. I think maybe, just maybe, this is the best thing that's ever happened in this manga. I need a little while to think about it to make sure (because for example, there was also that one time with the vegetables, but then again that's since been tainted by Kaoru's black, treacherous heart), but it's got to be a candidate. My mental soundtrack can't seem to decide whether it should be playing the Power Rangers theme or the Powerpuff Girls theme, but either way, this is the stuff of epic.
4. AND THEN, ANOTHER WASTE OF A PAGE. Well, not quite, because this one has Dino and Squalo, and also Mammon floating around in the top center in a way that almost makes it look like it's a natural thing to be doing, but other than that, it's just a page of people observing out loud that the smoke has cleared (THANK YOU, OBVIOUS STATEMENT MAN), and wiping their foreheads and going, "PHEW, THAT WAS TENSE, IS EVERYONE ALL RIGHT?"
In fact, they mostly are, except that the Ninth has a standard shounen-issue cut on his arm and the Sin™ seems to be lying in a broken heap on the ground, but since part of me just wants to say "good riddance" to both these things, yeah, in all I'd answer that question with a solid "more or less."
I gotta say, though, Vongola security really sucks ass. Way to invite all of your mafia friends to your mafia castle to witness your hugely important mafia ceremony only to let it get all blown up, guys.
5. "Not so!" says the Ninth. "Secretly unbeknownst to everyone else, we replaced the real Sin™ with a fake in order to lure out the culprit! The real one is lying safe inside a vault protected by a hilariously elaborate fail-safe!" Tsk, Ninth, so you still don't believe me when I express my skepticism in regard to your security measures? TAKE A LOOK AT PAGE NINE, THEN. STILL GOT ANYTHING MORE TO SAY? I BELIEVE THAT WAS YOUR SHINY VAULT THAT GOT BROKEN INTO, YES? RIGHT. THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT.
6. Ganauche "Don't Fuck With Me" III is so distraught by this news that he whips out a pistol (!!) on the thin pretense of "SOMEONE'S IN THE ROOM!", only to have it pop out of his hand and FUCKING EXPLODE, and please pardon me a moment while I swear copiously and pump my fists in the air. OH MY GOD. NOW THIS IS FUCKING SHOUNEN. I'm pretty sure Amano drew this entire page using pure testosterone rather than ink. You can tell because virtually every statement on the page ends with two exclamation points!!
7. All of a sudden, ice spears or something fly out of nowhere at everyone, and Ganauche, not satisfied with the amount of manliness displayed on the previous page, blocks the attack with what must surely be lightning flames, except that I didn't know it was possible for lightning flames to be THAT COOL. But apparently it is. Anything's possible when you're Thundery Nono and the world is your bitch.
8. And then the smoke clears and THE CULPRITS ARE REVEALED at last. Adelheid's boobs have grown bigger again, I'm pretty sure, and against the dramatic background of suddenly more-awesome-looking-than-ever underlings, Enma looks tinier than ever before. Like, I'm pretty sure I could pick him up with one arm.
However, in spite of these distractions, the real star of this page is Tsuna's horrified right-in-the-feelings "Enma... kun?" face, which I confess to having been really excited to see but suddenly feel horribly guilty about now. SOMEONE GIVE TSUNA A HUG. I DON'T CARE IF IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF BATTLE, YOU CAN SPARE A SECOND OR TWO FOR COMFORT. Damn, this is going to be bad, isn't it.
9. Enma's all, "Mine now," and just like that, becomes the single awesomest villain to ever grace the pages of this manga. Sorry, Byakuran. I know you tried really hard and killed people and had firework princess wings, but HAVE YOU SEEN ENMA'S FACE ON THIS PAGE? You can't compete with that. It's game over.
Seriously, I am so excited to have Enma as a villain it's not even funny. THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I WANTED IT TO BE. I AM ONE HUNDRED PERCENT SATISFIED WITH THIS RESULT. I almost feel like I should put the chapter down for a moment and remember to breathe. OKAY. OKAY. CALM DOWN. IT'S OKAY.
lksjdfalksj so epic SO FUCKING EPIC.
10. Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for, when Tsuna finally realizes that the person who attacked his best friend was his other best friend (he has a lot of best friends). Kaoru has a little panel in which I dearly want to punch him, and then Enma admits that yes, they did that (but it's totally justified because YOU DIDN'T READ MY LOVE LETTER!!!).
And then he does this.
And I just. Oh my God. What.
Okay, so. Enma poured the Sin™ on his ring and suddenly an even cooler Sistema C.A.I. popped out and an even more badass dying will flame erupted on his head. Apparently? And then Tsuna went from D:? to >8O in like two seconds flat. HAHAHA. THIS REALLY DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE. Which is to say, I love it.
So this chapter officially makes this arc the arc of angst, character development, and badass, which means I am now 90% sure it is my favorite. Any chapter which inspires this much fangirling and fanboying is completely A+ with me.
I may be back to rant more about all this later, because I can't stop squeeing over EVERYTHING! EVER!, but in the meantime, I think I'm about done with this post. XD

Also, I gotta say: I totally wait so I can read your running commentary along with the manga itself. It just makes it twice as awesome, every week. This is epic.

3- The Ninth family is so awesome it hurts. Imagine them in their prime fdgskgkshdhgds
5- There's part of me that's really mad it was in the next room. Really Ninth? They barely had to look.
6- First of all, I'm happy to see yet again that they DO still use guns in the mafia! Second, Ganauche is my favorite. Ever.
8- The boobs are bigger, and yet her legs are thinner. The hell.
Poor Tsuna. Not that I'm not looking forward to how GAR he can react to betrayal. I'm a horrible fan.
9- I love Evil Enma. He is the perfect enemy for Tsuna because he's a friend and gjfhsdkslgsldds
10- I swear if I had a dollar for every person (including myself) that wanted to kill Kaoru, I'd be fucking rich. And this makes me happy.
Enma had to cry his tears for three good years. You can't be mad at him.
And on that note, I must say that this spiffy new glove we're seeing looks like something out of a specific Beyoncé video. COUGH.
Tsuna's face ffffffff I can't wait for next week already. >8DDD!

3. OH YOU BET I HAVE BEEN IMAGINING THEM. They're so awesome that I'm amazed the other mafia families don't go around wearing Kevlar whenever they're around them just in case their aura of badass accidentally gets out of control and hurts someone.
5. "Don't worry, Tsuna, that was a fake. The real one is approximately a dozen feet behind us." I have to wonder exactly who thought this was somehow a good plan. And also why the Ninth thought it was a good idea to reveal the true location out loud when the bad guys were obviously still on the loose. OOPS.
6. My one regret about the Primo arc is that we never got to see G use a gun, so I'm glad someone has finally broken the taboo. I was starting to wonder if Reborn was the only one aware that guns still actually exist.
8. Yeah, it really doesn't make sense. You kinda just have to roll with it, I guess. XD
And it made me happy beyond words to see Tsuna going through the agony of betrayal and then getting hella pissed off and ragey. I am a terrible person.
9. Exactly, with Enma there's all that additional baggage of "BUT HE WAS MY FRIIIIIEND" on top of the usual villain drama. It's so awesome.
10. Fella better get some plastic surgery when this is all over and done with, because otherwise he's a dead man. He won't be able to go ten feet down the street without getting ripped apart.
HAHA THE GAUNTLET THING DOES LOOK LIKE A MUSIC VIDEO PROP. OH ENMA. And next week can't come soon enough. :D

5- As slow as khr can get that was pretty bad. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Shimon overheard the whole thing while the were scratching chalkboards and changing clothes, thinking, "Oh. That's where it is? Well, that was easy."
6- Lol, seriously. Guns show up in this manga as often as Mukuro does.
8- I'll end up wondering every week, "Hm, wonder what size Adelheid is this chapter."
That didn't sound gay at all, nope.Let us be terrible people together then! 8D
9- Which makes the up-and-coming fights so much harder and lessons must be learned and character development and. This arc is going to rock. More than it already has.
10- Word. He needs a new name, a new country to live in,...ffff He's so done. The WORSE thing is I'm almost positive this is gonna be canon, considering everyone that fights Yamamoto has a horrible fate. And it gets worse every time...yikes.
Doesn't it? LOL. No wonder the Shimon were friends (or whatever) with the Vongola, obviously their fabulousness can compete.
Thank goodness this chapter was good enough that we have something to hold us through =DD

Oh, and I like how you ™ the Vongola Sin, btw.
...Also, I realized [and forogt to say earlier, go me] that Tsuna calling the Ninth Grandpa a few chapters back is kind of a pun on Nono and Nonno [which means grandfather in Italian].

THAT SHIT IS TOTALLY TRADEMARKED, YOU KNOW IT.
And that is pretty cool. Actually, I'm probably more amused by that then I should be. XD TEEHEE, NINTH, YOU ARE OLD.

>So this chapter officially makes this arc the arc of angst, character development, and badass
Which are my favourite dish. I'm loving every panel of this arc. >w< I loved EVERY arc KHR had to offer, but this one is really keeping me EAGER to read every chapter. And I want MORE angst and more character development after the first Tsuna/Enma skirmish. X°D
I SO want this arc to be animated AS-IT-IS. I really hope Artland and TV Tokyo won't censure it too much. I've got a huge fear... since the anime's fastly reaching the manga, what if they DERAIL from the manga's story instead of putting on fillers to give this arc some time to develop itself before the anime goes on with the Simon Arc too? I hope I was clear >.

THIS, SO MUCH. I always get way too excited about KHR, but this arc in particular has really been one awesome cliffhanger after the next. I don't think I've been disappointed by a chapter yet. Once it's finished, it'll be fun to go back and read it all in one go, too.
Yeah, so far I haven't been too worried about the anime censorship, but the gun is probably pushing it. I have my doubts we'll ever be allowed to see something that awesome on Saturday morning Japanese TV. :( I wouldn't worry too much about the anime story getting off track, though; so far they've done an admirable job slowing things down with the Arco Arc and the Primo Arc, and once the Future Arc ends, they'll probably throw in another one or two filler arcs there before starting up the Inheritance Arc.
They can also use that opportunity to finally animate the Longchamp chapters, assuming that miracles really do happen. >_>And they've still got at least a dozen Future Arc episodes left to go in any case, so I think we're all right.no subject

Hopefully Yama will at least get a cameo before too long, because I don't want Amano to leave the giant question mark of his recovery unresolved for ages and ages. :/

And, somehow, I agree with you on the perspective that Vongola has serious problems with security. =_= They sure don't seem like the most powerful mafia in the world so far.
But, I hope they will change that opinion of mine. :D
no subject
Yeah, this was a really dumb plan. If you're going to set a trap for the bad guys, at least make sure their objective is more than a dozen feet away, otherwise you might as well be handing it to them. XD
But I must say, the gun more than made up for it. They can screw up security all they want as long as it results in ACTION HERO Ganauche.

Everything I wished for
except the canonization of my OTPto happen in KHR is all in this freaking arc!~<3Now I remember again why I started reading this shounen manga~<3 It's the fucking mafia~<3
asdkj NINTH GUARDIANS in freaking BADAZZ ACTION~! I agree with you on things being drawn with testosterone rather than ink: Holy shiaaat~ Coyote and Ganauche~~<3
Tsuna turning on Hyper-mode with no pills or bullets? FINALLY??!!
/wibble oh how they grow up so fast~~!
no subject
My one regret in this chapter is that Coyote didn't get to be as much of a badass as Ganauche did. I guess he's just lazy, the old fart.
AND YES, THE WAY HYPER MODE JUST SWITCHED ON LIKE A FREAKING LIGHTBULB WAS AMAZING. Soooo cooooooool oh this chapter, God I love it so.
no subject
and anyway, I love the lazy old fart's name; it's so strange, it's amusingTsuna,
how did you turn yourself on (wait, that sounds wrong; let me rephrase)how did you do that? Is it the betrayal? Anger?(I don't think it's revenge for Yama, for some reason)Or does the Vongola ring being in its original form have something to do with it? I can't wait for next week~<3no subject
I love him too. Him and his name.It might be a combination of both. The upgraded Vongola ring almost certainly has a lot of cool new features we're not aware of yet, and the shock/betrayal/anger he was feeling would be a dying will trigger if there ever was one. Hard to imagine a more potent emotional cocktail than that.
no subject
I like Enma better after he become a villain though, why does evil make people look less shota?
no subject
I don't know! Inuyasha had some shota villains back in the day, but it really is hard to convey adorableness in a small child hellbent on killing things. The new look definitely suits Enma, though.

I... actually snickered at first when Tsuna did his dramatic "WHY?!" since my immediate response was, "Uh, Tsuna, were you not paying attention when he said it's for revenge?"
I know this is supposed to be all dramatic this chapter, but with how Nono & Tsuna acted, it seemed more like a "Let's watch the Vongola bosses be stupid!" chapter.
THE FLAMING NONO TEAM (tm, coming soon to a circus near you!) and a gun EXPLODING are the most testosterone & SHOUNEN things that've happened in this arc so far.
no subject
Haha, it makes sense in the emotion of the moment, though. From Tsuna's perspective, it makes no sense for a friend he trusted to suddenly be out for revenge against him and his family, since they've never personally done anything to them (and on top of that, they'd had all of those soul-searching conversations about the mafia and how much they both hated it). And it's like, "You maimed Yamamoto over that??" I would probably have said the same thing.
But it is kind of a lulzy response coming two seconds after Enma explained the reason. XD
Leave it to OLD MEN to bring the badass back to this arc. NONOS WITH GUNS, EVERYONE DUCK FOR COVER, THIS SHIT COULD GET AWESOME.

Bad plot Amano.
But after reading thru the numerous RABID RANTS about how fantastic this chappie was, it began to grow on me. A LOT. But there are still gripes of course.
Í had mixed feelings when the gun was whipped out. On one hand, I was thrilled. Someone FINALLY USES A FREAKIN'GUN!(This is a mafia for heavens sake! Not power rangers!) On the other, I was scoffing away. What made em think that guns were effective against flames anyway?
Initially, I really HATED Enma's dying will look. He really looked like a power ranger. Gawd. But it kinda grew on me I guess.
Like many others, I didn't know that Tsuna entered his dying will mode without the use of pills! Now that you've enlightened me, I'll be marvelling at Amano's subtle twist in the plot.
And Sin housed in a safe that's placed a dozen feet away. PUH-LEASE... Er nonos, I ain't really impressed with you ppl. It is bad enough when most of you guys are able to scare kids shitless with your looks (one of them resembles Hisoka while another bears resemblance to Killua's brother pin head days. Both from HxH) And now you guys display such incompetence... Totally notimpressive nonos. Non-dying will Tsuna could prob do a better job, and he is pathetic.
But my biggest complain is the plunging quality of drawings. The past few chappies were rather haphazardly drawn, in my opinion. Tsuna looks pretty odd in a couple of panels.
All that being said, its time to squeal along with the rest. FINALLY! KHR IS GOING ON THE ANGST ROUTE! My greatest fear when I started reading Khr was its apparent romantic view of the Mafia, of justice, friendship, whats not. The TYL arc didn't seem too bleak either. A couple of chappie on betrayal in this new arc totally pawns the TYL arc in terms of Mafia realism.
Now if only Tsuna will turn more mafia like... Killing Byakuran was definately a good start.
no subject
It could be that the gun was faster than using the flames. Either that, or Ganauche just believes in tradition. But yeah, it was kind of ridiculous.
NOT THAT I MIND.Lol, I'm a fan of over-the-top villains (RIP BYAKURAN), so I have no complaints. XD YOU CAN BE AS RIDICULOUS-LOOKING AS YOU LIKE, ENMA.
I really loved how Amano did that. It happened so naturally that I didn't notice either until my second look at the page. But it makes complete sense; if that kind of shock/anger/betrayal isn't capable of activating a natural dying will state, nothing is.
The Nonos really dropped the ball. You'd think that, given what happened to Yamamoto and the Giegue family, they wouldn't have been quite so overconfident. I WILL REFRAIN FROM MAKING JOKES ABOUT SENILITY, but maybe it is time for some new leadership.
The art quality does tend to drop when Amano is drawing action as opposed to plot, I agree. KHR has had that problem for a while, unfortunately. It'd be nice if we could go back to Varia arc quality (no pun intended XD), but oh well.
And yeah, this arc has definitely taken a couple of big and promising steps toward a darker kind of feel. And if fandom reaction for the last few arcs is anything to go by, it's totally paying off. I don't know that I'd be thrilled to see Tsuna lose all of his wide-eyed shota innocence just yet, but I definitely have no complaints about the plot as a whole becoming more mature.
