KHR 307

[blah blah I still haven't caught up with comments yet]

1. The one good thing about being RIDICULOUSLY INACTIVE this week is that I actually went into this chapter totally unspoiled for once, which is always fun. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, WHEEEE. So let's get started!

--HOLY JESUS

RYOHEI, DID YOU BLOW UP SOMEONE WITH YOUR FISTS AGAIN

This has to stop, young man. Honestly, now.

2. Poor Aoba, his body got all smashed up and his brain melted. :( REST IN PEACE--

--oooooor not.

Okay, again I feel the need to ask the burning question, "Aoba, how in the hell are you not dead?" Apparently Yamamoto is the only character in this manga subject to realistic responses to physical trauma. "Any normal human being would have passed out ages ago," come on. This is almost as bad as Hibari fighting "unconsciously" during the Kokuyou Arc. BASICALLY IT IS BULLSHIT. Oh hey, Gokudera turned into Ed again.

3. Wow, Ryohei, it only took you three chapters to figure out that when fighting a guy like this, the smart thing to do might be to FUCKING WAIT until your ridiculous "hit-me-to-charge" laser punch is completely powered up before attacking him! As opposed to your chosen method of "let's try thirty percent! No? Okay then, let's get beaten up ALL OVER AGAIN until we hit sixty percent and then try that! STILL NOT ENOUGH? OKAY, TIME TO GET BEATEN UP YET AGAIN UNTIL I'M FINALLY AT FULL POWER."

The ladies will tell you, no one likes a guy who gets too excited and repeatedly blasts his weapon too early, Ryohei. I'm just saying.

4. So somehow, this battle between two idiots has come down to this: Who will manage to keep from dying for the longest? Will it be Aoba, whose torso is currently gushing blood like Niagara Falls (fortunately for him, it's more like the American Falls as opposed to the Horseshoe Falls), or Ryohei, who now has to sit back and let Aoba start whalin' on him yet again? Gokudera, Tsuna, please please please tell me that you two are learning something from watching all this, at least. XD

5. Uh oh, they're reminding us about the rules again. I wonder if that means we can finally expect a winner and a loser in this chapter. Glad I didn't spoil myself, then. THIS WAY I CAN PANIC PROPERLY.

6. MORE PANELS OF PEOPLE RUNNING AROUND AND PUNCHING EACH OTHER, HOORAY. WE'LL NEVER GET TIRED OF THOSE.

...whoa. But it's some seriously hardcore punching, though. D: Shit, that looks painful.

The saddest thing is, part of me can't help but think these two are secretly having the time of their lives right now. Sometimes a man's just gotta stand up and get the shit beat out of him while also totally beating the shit out of someone else. They really don't, though. But maybe these guys do.

7. Fuck. I wish Ryohei would have taken into consideration the fact that no matter how this fight ends, he'll be completely useless afterwards with damage like this, though. :| Somehow, I don't think even miracle sun healing is gonna cut it on this one.

AND WATCH IT, RYOHEI, HE'S AIMING BELOW THE BELT NOW! YOUR LEGS ARE BAD ENOUGH, BUT IF YOU EVER WANT TO HAVE KIDS WITH HANA SOMEDAY YOU HAD BETTER KEEP AOBA THE HELL AWAY FROM ANYTHING ELSE.

"This is nothing!" Yeah, he knows. He knows it could still be worse, okay.

8. Well, that makes two Vongola guardians completely maimed, now. :/

...how is it still only at 90 percent? Just, what? THE HELL DOES HE HAVE TO DO TO REACH FULL POWER, DIE??

And his left arm and right hand are both busted, so that's just great. Now what...? IF ONLY AOBA WOULD CEASE HIS BRUTAL BEATDOWN FOR A MOMENT IN ORDER TO DO SOMETHING REALLY STUPID LIKE TAUNT HIM.

...sweet!

9. Of course, Ryohei is having none of it. "STOP TALKING AND PUNCH ME AGAIN." It's clear that we're down to the last few remaining brain cells on both sides of this fight. XD Yeah, okay, he has to get it up to 100 percent somehow. No point in taking chances after all of this abuse, I get that.

10. ...

......

  1. Ouch.
  2. I DON'T EVER WANT TO TRADE LIVES WITH EITHER OF THESE GUYS EVER.
  3. Also, I have just added both of them to my official list of People I Never Want to Meet Alone in a Dark Alley. Congratulations, you two.
  4. Awww it's a sun how cute.
  5. FUCKING HELL, RYOHEI I LOVE YOU AND ALL BUT HOW MANY MORE CHAPTERS IS THIS FIGHT GOING TO LAST.

Seriously, while I can't stress enough how awesome it is to see an under-appreciated character getting center stage for such a prolonged time (not to mention the abundant shirtlessness and unprecedented amount of Serious Ryohei), that still doesn't change the fact that the last THREE chapters can neatly be summarized as "AOBA PUNCHES RYOHEI A LOT; RYOHEI BLOWS UP AOBA; AOBA PUNCHES RYOHEI EVEN MORE; RYOHEI BLOWS UP AOBA AGAIN; AOBA PUNCHES RYOHEI EVEN MORE, GODDAMN; RYOHEI GIVES AOBA A HUG AND PREPARES TO BLOW HIM INTO THE FUCKING SKY."

WELL, WHATEVER. I'm just going to spend the next week being extraordinarily grateful that all my bones are intact.

P.S. Happy Belated Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] waterlemon_chi and [livejournal.com profile] beruichi! ♥ Also, whoa, what happened to the little LJ toolbar icons, this is weird. *_*

HAI

I agree with most of what you say, lowls. YES RYOHEI YOU NEED TO HAVE KIDS WITH HANA, SO BE CAREFUL OKAY

nah, I'll waste my breath. Meh. Ryohei, the poor guy, he's pretty uneducated. /hides

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, you can see how worried Gokudera, Tsuna and Reborn all get once Aoba starts disregarding the sacred rules of above-the-belt. RYOHEI I HOPE YOU WORE LIKE A DIAMOND CUP OR SOMETHING.

Ryohei, the poor guy, he's pretty uneducated.

IF THIS IS A SUBTLE WAY OF SAYING "DUMB AS A POST", I CAN'T REALLY ARGUE. Oh, Ryohei. XD

[identity profile] snowpoison.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What will we do with him, eh? /sigh
RYOHEI, GO TO A SUMMER SCHOOL OR SOMETHING, OKAY? WE ALL LOVE YOU, BUT YOU NEED TO SMARTEN UP A LITTLE. JUST A LITTLE

I like a good fight and all, but blood and guts and bones pretty much spell 'ouchness' if you know what I mean. BUT it's to be expected BUT this chapter went a little extreame (I think?)

[identity profile] daigranon.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I got bored about a month ago with all this...

Aoba's stomach made me cringe -___-

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel ya. Aside from the awesome twist of Aoba having the Byakugan, this fight has been way too straightforward to justify this many chapters. I don't mind long fights, but I like them to have variety. This is straight-up shounen, which is great except for when it's this dragged-out. XD

It gives me high hopes for the next couple of fights, though. There's not much you can do with a boxing match no matter how creative you try to get, but Tsuna and Gokudera's fighting styles are a lot more interesting. AND LAMBO TOO, I can't forget him. Oh God, now there's a character I want to see have a three or four-chapter fight.

And Aoba's injuries didn't make me cringe as much as Ryohei's broken bones did, but yeah.

[identity profile] daigranon.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
THE BYAKUGAN LOL FFFYES.

Fighting in shounen most usually bores me to the extreme because IT NEVER ENDS. I know that's what defines shounen...but I hate it all the same. There are other, better ways of depicting action without teenagers trying to kill each other for 4838603593858 chapters.

Agreed with Lambo, though. ^_^

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
THE BYAKUGAN WAS PURE GOLD. GENIUS.

Hmm, for me, it really depends on how interesting the fight is, I guess. Like for example, I know Gokudera's fight with Gamma drove a lot of people crazy when it first came out because it went on forever (yeah, even you've still got nothing on those two, Ryohei), but I absolutely loved it because I'm obsessed with 59 there was so much going on there. The C.A.I. and its 500 different weapon combos; Gamma's flashbacks; Uri's transformation and subsequent epic teamwork with Gokudera, and so on. I could watch a fight like that go on for ages and never get tired of it (...well, eventually I'd probably start missing the other characters, I guess, but even so). And I much prefer that type of fight to, say, his match against Zakuro that lasted one chapter. It just seems like a waste when the best thing I can think to say about a fight is "...at least it was short?" But of course, that kind of fight is in turn still preferable to a fight where nothing happens and it goes on for ages. So it's hard to say.

At least the action in KHR is generally more interesting than the action in most other shounen, though. I'm looking at you, Bleach and Naruto and DBZ. ...nah, One Piece, you're still good.

Come on, Lambo battle! You totally owe it to him after having everyone ignore that bit with the glasses, Amano. DO IT DO IT DO IT. XD

[identity profile] daigranon.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
xD Especially how fans turned it into Byakugan = X-Ray nekkid vision.

True. It depends on who you like as a character, and the fighting style.

I think there have only been very few battles that I've liked (I'm so picky, I know..) Hm.. Roy vs. Envy in FMA Brotherhood, Gaara vs. Anyone and Kakashi vs. Anyone in Naruto, Urahara vs. Yammy in Bleach, and in Reborn...hmm....Reborn fights never seem to capture my interest, even though I agree with you, the action generally seems more interesting. Maybe Squalo vs. Yamamoto--definitely 20YL Lambo vs. Levi. That was win.

Unrelated question-- if I want to switch my journal to S1 when clicking on cuts, how do I do it and still keep my pretty layout for everything else? I see you have it for your own journal. &hearts

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, yes. WELL, I MEAN, LET'S BE FAIR, THAT'S PRETTY MUCH WHAT IT WAS.

Yeah, for me the list is limited too, at least if we're talking strictly manga. I enjoyed the majority of fights in the first half of Naruto (especially the ones you mentioned, as well as Naruto vs. Neji, which had one of the best finishing moves ever), and I've liked just about all the fights in One Piece, as I said... but aside from that (and excluding KHR), nothing from any other series comes to mind. (Well, wait, Alive: The Final Evolution had some good ones too.) I don't necessarily hate most of the other battles, but they don't stand out and if/when I reread a series, I tend to skip most of them. I haven't skipped anything in KHR yet, though, and there have been a few fights I've even gone back to reread (especially Yamamoto vs. Squalo--that might just be my favorite fight ever). I could probably think of more if I wasn't tired. XD

As for your journal, going here and disabling customized comment pages should do it. :)

[identity profile] flyby.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It does kind of ruin the effect of all the shounen powerup secret move stuff when they're both looking like roadkill, lol. Also is it me or was it getting all accidental BL at the end there? It's like, whoa! He punched a miniature sun into existence! And Aoba's not dead yet but they both look like they're about to fall over and wow that looks painful! And now they're... hugging and moaning each other's names...? o.O;

IF YOU EVER WANT TO HAVE KIDS WITH HANA SOMEDAY YOU HAD BETTER KEEP AOBA THE HELL AWAY FROM ANYTHING ELSE.

>.> *cough*

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"How's that, Ryohei?!" "I've caught you... Ko...yo..." Yeah, it did get a little gay toward the end there. I would have felt the BL vibe more if they hadn't both been so utterly terrifying, though. XD Ryohei looks like he's prepared to straight-up kill him on that last page. AND HE'LL SLEEP WELL AFTERWARD, TOO. :O

AND I SEE WHAT YOU ARE IMPLYING THERE... XDDD

[identity profile] beruichi.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
tee hee, thanks~ +。:.゚ヽ(´∀`。)ノ゚.:。+゚

2. Yeah, how come it took only one hit for Yamamoto to almost die while Ryohei, despite having several bones broken, can still stand and fight? And Koyo, too. He should be dead by now, but for some reason, he's not. HOW UNFAIR, AMANO. D:

3. The ladies will tell you, no one likes a guy who gets too excited and repeatedly blasts his weapon too early, Ryohei. I'm just saying.
ohoho, i see what you did there. ~(òωó ) and it took him how many chapters to think that he needs to use full power to beat Koyo? reaally smart, Ryohei. just like another sports-crazed character i know~ *sniff*

8. Yeah, even ifafter he wins this, Ryohei's going to be just a lump of meat. I doubt he can fight after that. *cue Vongola's emergency response team feat. Shamal and cue substitute player i'm-all-better-now Yamamoto pleaaaaaase*

if this fight doesn't end in the next chapter, it never will. (O.O)

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, hope you had fun. ♥

2. Is this karma for Yamamoto having been so universe-defyingly awesome in the past, perhaps? Because it still does not seem fair.

3. The thing that really makes me smack my forehead is that each time, he has to start all the way from the beginning again. He basically ended up taking twice as much damage as he needed to. WTG, RYOHEI.

8. Yeah, bones are pretty important in the grand scheme of things. Later on you're totally going to be kicking yourself and wishing yours weren't all shattered, Ryohei. THEY COULD HAVE COME IN HANDY, YOU KNOW? (And I've got my fingers crossed for that player substitution.)

if this fight doesn't end in the next chapter, it never will.

Yeah, really.
way2dawn: Riku smiling on the Dark Beach (Gokudera/kitty is spoiled rotten)

[personal profile] way2dawn 2010-09-24 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeah, the broken bones were pretty wince-inducing :/

But at least it'll be over in the next chapter? That said, I am also super-excited that the fights in this arc are gonna be longer.

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that kind of thing is really hard for me to read or watch. Thank my lucky stars I couldn't read the katakana sound effects--I just know it would have been even worse if the shot of the bones breaking were accompanied by a giant balloon-letter "SNAP." 8(

But yes, I agree with both of these statements. Generally, longer fights are something I look forward to, and I am dying to see Amano pull off another epic match like Yamamoto v. Squalo or Gokudera v. Gamma. Lambo's overdue for a nice, long one too, which could be really interesting since the bazooka makes his fights so unpredictable. I've definitely got my fingers crossed.

[identity profile] reflectives.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This is like, the perfect summary post evar. All I really need to keep up on Reborn since I haven't been reading it much lately.

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I don't know if I would call it a "summary", since I ramble so much sometimes that it might be quicker to just read the actual chapter, but thank you! /o/ And you're not missing out on much if you haven't been keeping up; this fight has been one of those things that will probably read better if you do it all in one go afterward anyway.

[identity profile] smilypie.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Your summary of this fight is perfect. /DIES. Seriously though, tl;dr: PUNCHING.

But. Now we can't say Amano's never given Ryohei screen time. I see how she works.

/getting too lazy to make long comments anymore lol

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
dfasklj yours is even better. XDD "tl;dr: PUNCHING." YOU GOT IT DOWN TO TWO WORDS, THAT'S AMAZING.

I only wish it had been more Serious Ryohei screentime and less Getting-Punched Ryohei screentime. Oh well.

(Sob it's okay, I respond much more quickly to short comments anyway, so I'm reaping what I sow or something I guess. XD)

[identity profile] smilypie.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
LOL BUT IT'S TRUE. And really sad actually.

Yeah 8c I keep forgetting this series likes bleeding injured middle school boys more than seriousness though lolwat.

(Pffft *patpat* we all understand XD)

[identity profile] reana-camellia.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know that you can actually summarize this chapter into this:

*punch punch punch*
blah blah blach 90% blah blah
*punch punch punch*
SUDDENLY A SUN!!!

Someone else thought of this first though xD
It is still hilarious anyway.

no offense if you like the fight

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
no offense if you like the fight

I assume that the people who have been enjoying this fight have been enjoying it precisely because it's filled with good old fashioned shounen punching and the like, so I hardly see how someone could take offense. Because that summary is dead accurate. XD

Anyway, A+, would lol again, heh.

[identity profile] ekmisao.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice that not many people are noticing this: Ryohei strategized for a whole fight! Back in the fight with Lussuria he planned out just one part of it. Now the whole fight is a long strategic plan. This is something you expect out of Gokudera, but not Ryohei. Our boy is growing up.

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The only problem is his whole strategy consisted of "LET AOBA BREAK ALL MY BONES SO I CAN POWER UP AND HIT HIM BACK." XD Of course, it's not his fault that's how his ability works, though. I just hope next time he's up for a fight, Amano comes up with something less torturous to watch. Also something that won't effectively take him out of the game afterward. I was really enjoying having him along as a temporary main character, but I assume with injuries like these, he'll have to stay behind from this point on. :(

[identity profile] ekmisao.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He probably knows something we don't, instinctively.

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He is a very observant fighter; years of boxing training at work, no doubt. He rarely underestimates (or overestimates) an opponent from what I can recall, and he adapts quickly. And he knew how to work his strategy around his ability; he paced himself, let Aoba deal him just enough damage to power up his SUNSHINE UPPERCUT!! and so on. I think his weakness is that his fighting style is so self-destructive, though. I mean, if you're a boxer, you're going to take a pounding; there's no way around that. But he takes it to a whole new level and gets wrecked in pretty much every fight he's in. And it's one thing to have a long-term strategy for the fight itself, but it would be nice if he thought ahead to what they'll still have to do after the fight, as well.

...Man, I'm picking him apart, though. I'M SORRY, LAWN HEAD. You were good, really; I'm just demanding. XD

[identity profile] storm-obsession.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed, it drags out WAY too long.
And when I saw Ryohei HUG the fellow, I thought
1) I was seeing things. But I wasn't. I know because I flipped back and stared at the bloody mess of two guys ...hugging?
2) Ew. Fanservice.
3) Isn't it kinda gross with all the blood?

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
MUCH TOO LONG. Assuming this is the end of the fight, looking back on the whole thing, I think it is now safe to say this could have definitely used some editing.

As for the hug, it's hard to tell because you can't really see whose arms are doing what, but I think it was actually more of a clinch. Especially since Ryohei said afterward that he'd "caught" him. Aoba probably assumed at first that he was clinching because he was tired, but it looks like Ryohei was using it as a strategy to pin him down.

3) Isn't it kinda gross with all the blood?

Nah, the blood just makes them look more gritty and manly. :P

IT'S ABOUT TIME

[identity profile] phppsmss.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been waiting for weeks now and *drum roll* finally! You're annoyed with KHR's utterly slow and crappy plot development! BANZAI!

It is no wonder that weekly chapter comments have plunged. We're all waiting for this stupid punching mania to be over. ( I wasn't going to comment till Ryohei's match is over, but since I was passing by... might as well comment)

The rest of the guardians learning something from it? nah, dream on.

M not going to rant how fail the plot is again. Can't be bothered.

XD

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, yes. AFTER WEEKS AND WEEKS I WAS FINALLY WORN DOWN. But well, I did say I wanted to wait until the end before I went back and judged anything, and now that the fight is (presumably) over, I can do just that. Now that I know what Amano had planned, it's easy to look back and pick apart all the things that could have been edited along the way. This whole fight could probably have been concluded in less than half the pages with basically the same effect.

A poorly written fight (and 'stupid punching mania' was an especially great way of putting it XD) doesn't mean the plot itself is failing, though. :P In fact, depending on who wins or loses, the plot could start getting interesting again as soon as next week. Not that there'll be much chance to focus on it before the next fight begins, since that's just how fight arcs go. We'll be on to the next match soon enough, and hopefully it'll be Gokudera or Lambo in the ring this time, since both of them have much more interesting fighting styles than Ryohei.

But even though I read for plot and characters first and foremost, KHR isn't necessarily weak in the fighting department. Every arc so far has had at least one amazing stand-out fight (Tsuna vs. Mukuro, Yamamoto vs. Squalo, Gokudera vs. Gamma, etc.), and we haven't seen that in this arc yet, but there are still plenty of opportunities, so I'm still waiting for Amano to hit that sweet spot again. And I swear to God, if it's Lambo that does it, I will love EVERYTHING FOREVER.

SO PLEASE LET'S GET THIS OVER AND DONE WITH, AMANO.

[identity profile] windgoddess688.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
ohhh man....well I'll be happy as long as KHR doesn't go the way of Bleach or Naruto (ie- i can stay away from reading it for about 3 months and come back to it without being confused too much).....(ok that's being a little harsh but STILL!)

"eyes that can overheat at any second"
........*coughcough* umm...Cyclops called, Aoba......he wants to know if you're gonna still be needin' those glasses...
i'm sorry the idea of eyeballs that can suddenly self-combust is just too much-OMG I NEED TO STEAL AOBA FOR MY HALLOWEEN PARTY!!!!

"He aimed for the leg, THAT'S A FOUL MOVE!" *whacks Tsuna* do you not remember these two idiots- I mean brave young men- saying that there WERE no foul moves?!!!!

heh heh....Gokudera DOES look like Ed a lot in this chapter....

[identity profile] makeste.livejournal.com 2010-10-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this fight was treading dangerously close to that kind of Naruto/Bleachish territory. All action, zero plot, and completely skippable so long as you know how it ends. More than a little disappointing.

LASER EYES

Yeah, he is basically a Cyclops/Neji fusion. At least the polygon visual effect was cool.

Tsuna just can't wrap his mind around the extreme lengths both of these idiots (I can't even type "brave young men" in jest, sob) will go to to win. I can't really blame him. XD

And yeah, quite a few of his reaction panels have been Ed-ish lately. I think it's partially the ponytail that's doing it, heh.
