So today is October 14, which means it is Tsuna's birthday! (AND ALSO, it means that yesterday was Reborn's birthday! MANY HAPPY RETURNS, YOU LUNATIC SUPERBABY.) And since I'm in a fangirlish mood, I decided to do another tribute post like I did last year for Gokudera. \o/

So, keeping in mind that my favorite Tsuna moments might not necessarily match up with everyone else's (mostly because I actually prefer cute uncertain loser mode to bitchin' awesome dying will mode, just a bit), here's my Top Ten Tribute to Tsuna. OR TTTTT FOR SHORT.

(This is in chronological order, btw.)

1. "I want to defeat you!"

This was really Tsuna's first time in a desperate situation. Mukuro was being a dick and fighting him with all of his possessed bitches, and for once even Reborn couldn't help him out. But amazingly enough, when pushed into that corner, Tsuna's "true feelings" turned out not to be "AHHH RUN AHHH" but "FUCK YOU, YOU ARE GOING DOWN." This was the first time he really dug deep and found that maybe he was braver than he thought. (And it also happens to be the moment that triggers Leon giving him the gloves, and don't we all love those gloves?)

2. "Even if I'm dying, I will not give up!"

FIRST APPEARANCE OF HYPER DYING WILL MODE. |D And what a moment it is, especially coming on the heels of his first experience with the Rebuke Bullet and hearing all his friends tell him, "HEY YOU LOSER DON'T GIVE UP :/" This was one of the definitive moments in the series--the chapter where it finally became undeniably clear that yes, KHR KINDA KICKS ASS.

3. "If I had to watch my precious comrades die with my own eyes... I wouldn't be able to atone for it."

And we have another moment highlighting just what an awesome boss Tsuna is. Levi is pounding on 5-year-old Lambo (presumably because there were no puppies and kittens in the vicinity to kick instead), and even though Reborn warns him that interfering could get him disqualified, Tsuna refuses to sit back and watch. So he sabotages the arena without actually setting foot inside, which is not a little brilliant, even if the Cervello totally cheat and give Levi the ring anyway. YOU CAN'T WIN 'EM ALL, TSUNA.

4. "I'm begging you... somehow, keep Mom, Kyoko-chan, Haru and the others safe."

See, this would be an example of the aforementioned "My favorite moments might not be the same as everyone else's." XD This scene is like, the opposite of badass; I mean, he's crying himself to sleep for God's sake. And yet, that quality about Tsuna--that he does cry and get scared and panic--is one of the things I love most about him. He's just a normal kid, and here he's caught up in a situation where everyone he loves might be dying or dead, and he's helpless to do anything about it; the only thing he can do is pray. It's a really sad and powerful scene. ;_;

5. "Don't try to act cool, Tsuna. You're not the sort to be a hero, are you?"

This is my favorite scene between Reborn and Tsuna ever; it just beautifully illustrates their relationship. Reborn BITCHSLAPS TSUNA ACROSS THE ROOM, then goes up and grabs his collar and tells him to stop acting tough and just be his true self. And it works; immediately Tsuna is able to activate his ring by remembering the people he wants to protect. And then Reborn pulls him into a merciless armbar. Just... brilliant. IT IS EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM THAT I LOVE.

6. "I don't need this kind of power! If you want me to inherit such mistakes, then... I will wipe out the Vongola!"

So this is the scene where Tsuna passes out in the middle of training with Hibari and starts having trippy dreams about INHERITING THE SIN OF THE VONGOLA or whatever. And even knowing what's at stake (like, the fate of the world or something), Tsuna refuses to accept that bloody and violent history; he'd rather die than become that kind of boss. And ironically, his determination to NOT be the next boss is what prompts the Vongola First to accept him into the proud Vongola ranks. XD Oh Tsuna, you just can't do anything the conventional way, can you.

7. "The first words out of his mouth have always been, 'I can't do it,' but this time, it's, 'Maybe.'"

Inspired by Haru, Tsuna has the idea to use his soft dying will flame as a support for his BADASS DYING WILL FLAME, and attempts the X Burner for the first time. AND PROMPTLY SMASHES INTO A WALL in a way that would do Yamamoto proud. BUT, when Reborn asks him if he thinks he can master the technique, Tsuna answers with a vague "maybe", which as noted in the quote above is a huge turning point in his attitude. It really shows how far he's come regarding his faith in himself.

8. "Ready to launch! X BURNER!"

And of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't include the moment where we finally got to see the completed X Burner in action. I love the way Amano did this; the next few pages afterward are NOTHING BUT DESTRUCTION, and then we cut to a scene of Shouichi and the Cervello standing there looking at a viewscreen FULL OF FRIGGING STATIC because the cameras in the area have all been destroyed. Oh, and like, the three rooms next to where Tsuna used the flame, too. And Shou makes this face, and that... says it all, really.

9. "The weapon form of Tsuna's Leone di Cieli... is a vast sky, enveloping and engulfing all around it!"

Um. I'm just including this because... cape. Yeah. AMAZINGLY, IT IS STILL BOTH BADASS AND HYSTERICALLY FUNNY EVEN MONTHS LATER. Cue Batman theme... now.

10. "The 'me' of that time, who holds the biggest possibilities... shall come soon."

Last but not least, a moment from a Tsuna we've never actually seen in person, but who nonetheless just so happens to be responsible for, I don't know, THIS ENTIRE ARC. No matter how you look at it, TYL!Tsuna is just fucking epic. He somehow saw through Byakuran's ability with enough insight to concoct A CRAZY PLAN involving TIME TRAVEL and BRINGING SEMI-INNOCENT CHILDREN TO THE FUTURE TO DO BATTLE WITH A SEEMINGLY INVINCIBLE FOE. Which for the longest time seemed completely batshit insane until the very latest chapters when it finally became clear that because of Byakuran's ability and his knowledge about all of the present Vongola's techniques, the Vongola from the past were literally the only ones who might be able to stop him. And not only did Tsuna figure out this madness, but he also faked his own death as part of the plan to make it happen. That's just... wow. HE'S EITHER INSANE OR A GENIUS. There is no middle ground.

So, now that I'm done ranting about how awesome he is: a very happy birthday to you, failboss, and keep on fighting the good fight. ♥

NEVER CHANGE, TSUNA. I like to imagine that even TYL!Tsuna still occasionally has his moments of "HIIIEEEEEEEEEH?" It just wouldn't feel right otherwise. ♥

8U I HOPE HE NEVER DOES. I know. I would also like to see TYL!Tsuna like...trip over something or get bonked on the head by Reborn.

He is eternally topped by Reborn, I'm sure. If Dino still gets picked on by tiny!tutor all these years later, I have no doubt TYL!Tsuna will be forever abused no matter how awesome he is. XD

Kind of in the same vein as 4 and a few others, my favorite moment was as the end of the Kokuyo arc when, despite Reborn's warning, he felt bad for Mukuro. I enjoyed the genuine, if naive, outpouring of sympathy and made me do a 180 of my opinion on him. Sometimes it's hard to remember he's only 14.

Yeah, that's one of the many moments I would have included if I'd allotted more than ten spots (but then I would have been here all day XD). I also liked the scene during the Varia Arc where Reborn told Ken and Chikusa that Tsuna was constantly asking about them and what had happened to them. Or the scene right after Genkishi's death, when he gets angry and tells everyone they need to stop Byakuran. He's almost too compassionate for his own good; he just cares about everyone even the people trying to kill him. Definitely makes me love him all the more as a character.

TYL Tsuna is like the single most badass cameo in the TYL arc. For serious.
I have to admit that sometimes I forget that Tsuna's death was FAKED AFLKHDG IDK it's just so INGRAINED into my mind that he dies ><;

I KNOW, IT WAS SUCH AN UNEXPECTEDLY BADASS MOMENT... and then mittens fell from the sky. It's just like. Quintessential KHR. XD

AND I AGREE, looking back at some of the earliest chapters is SO FUCKING WEIRD. Amano had a much more shouneny style back then; it's so much prettier now.

I ALMOST NEVER FORGAVE LEVI FOR THAT. But then he grew that mustache. So I had to.

bawwww I know, it tugs at my heartstrings every time I look at it. The first few chapters of the Future Arc are easily the darkest in the entire manga, I think. Everything just seems so hopeless, and on top of that, you really get a sense for just how young Gokudera and Tsuna are compared to everyone ten years later; at that point they were so in over their heads.

IT'S WHAT YOU WERE MEANT TO DO, TSUNA.

He so is. Everything about him is EPIC TO THE EXTREME. And sometimes I almost forget too, heh.

I MUST say that I absolutely hate the fact that the big spread of Tsuna in the mantle says "The mantello di Vongola primo" Would it have hurt them to say "Il Mantello di Vongola primo" if anything? Seriously. >O

Tsuna's a good character because he shows FOR ONCE that all character aren't always badass but actually human, but at the same time... He just doesn't impress me. And Amano seems to be doing a lot for him to be impressive but, I just... I just don't really find him a very interesting character. But he's okay, and he definitely has his moments. xD

LOL, DON'T MAKE ME ESSAY EVEN MORE ABOUT WHY TSUNA IS AWESOME. :P Heh, I guess he's definitely not the type of character everyone goes for at first, but for me, the fact that he's so normal and dull and unassuming is what I love so much about him. He's the opposite of your typical shounen hero character. But that also means he doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone who reads shounen. I'm glad Amano went against the trend, though.

Yeah, but IEM has that in the recent chapter too. "Dieci Vongola" which is translated as "Ten Vongola" rather than Tenth Vongola which was probably intended. But I don''t know if the fault is with Amano or IEM. :P

I never said he was a bad caracter or doesn't appeal to me, I just don't think that he's so incredibly awesome as he's supposed to be. xD Besides, he does funny things with his face. :D

On the one hand, I can't imagine that Amano actually has much of a solid grasp on the Italian language. But on the other hand, the English translators probably couldn't do much better. Who knows? :P

OH LIKE PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY BE BOTHERED TO LOOK UP THE THINGS THEY'RE TRANSLATING. IMAGINE THE CHAOS, WHAT KIND OF WORLD WOULD WE BE LIVING IN. ...Yeah, I got nothin'; you're probably right. XD

I didn't read this the first time. Most of the things you mentioned are also why I like Tsuna so much. I might be a Yamamoto fangirl, I might write for Gokudera, I might worship Fon-sensei, but when all is said and done it was Tsuna and Reborn that reeled me in to this series.

I liked him for not being Naruto (that is, an overconfident boy), but also for not being every other whiny boy in manga (that is, while he whines, he does want to be better and defend what he loves).

Heh, amen to that. I started reading for Reborn, kept reading for Tsuna, and knew I was in love once Gokudera and Yamamoto showed up.

Yeah, he's a reluctant hero, but still a hero. Gotta love him. <3
